| Hey everyone, I just bought a nursery stock Juniper Nana, it is about 10 inched (20mm) hight & very dense. I'm in Australia & it is our first moth into Fall (Autumn) & i wanted to start pruning back some of the branches & foliage & begining shaping it for the up coming spring. I would only be doing minor pruning & maybe some 2-3mm branches on the lower section of the trunk. I will not be re-potting or anything else, all that will wait till spring, i will leave it in its nursery pot till then. I know that they are a pretty sturdy plant but do you think this will stress the plant out to much an possibly couse it to die.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all Ryan. |

| Taking off lowest branches is counterproductive to growing a fat trunk and then training it to taper. The low branches are the ones that 'feed' the trunk and can always be taken off later in the tree's life if they (or even just 1-2) don't agree with your final design. The best time of year for pruning is late fall or winter (when it's dormant), but don't go too wild until you're very sure of what you're doing because once cut, you can't glue them back on, but will always be able to cut them in future. |
