| I'm trying to come up with some sort of identification for a tree I'm using in a miniature natural garden for a show this coming week. I bought the tree from Lowe's at Christmas. It came all dressed up with a red ribbon and foil around it's 4" pot. I think it may be a juniper. It's not a spruce, pine, or cypress. It's an upright tree with multiple slender trunks--possibly cut back early to promote fullness. It's about 18" tall and about 4" in diameter and has blue juniper-like leaves. Anybody have any ideas?
Thank you. Betty |

| I bet my little tree is an immature Chamaecyparis lawsoniana. If it were a juniper, the needles would be hard and sticky, but my tree is hugable soft. Immature cypress leaves, like junipers, look different from mature leaves, right? Betty |

| If you had a juniper and the needles were hard (never mind sticky), the tree would be either dead or on its way. Can you not get a picture up either here or on this forum's gallery (but then leave a note here to direct us)? Multiple slender trunks does not sound like any conifer/evergreen in any case - sounds more like a house plant (they're often sold that way). Could it be a Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) which is not a pine at all, but is used as a house plant? |

| Try look at chamaecyparis pisifera as well, particularly c. pisifera "boulevard" Nice soft, blue foliage as you mentioned.. |

| Yes, Nigel! c. pisifera "Boulevard." Fantastic! I believe that's it exactly. Thanks so much! And just in time to print my cards listing each plant in my gardens. I had forgotten that the tree came without identification until I went to check the pot it came in. Thanks for taking time to reply, Lucy, but if you ever decide to become a tree hugger, just make sure you don't choose a juniper--dead or alive--as your subject. They're simply not friendly in either state. Betty |
