| Hey, I have recently bought two new developed Juniper Procumben "nana' which I am starting to shape, wiring & pruning for spring summer (Fall-Autumn now). I had a question in regards to pinching back the foliage. I have trimmed the underside of the branches, but some of the foligae on top of the branches is to deep. I know you have to constantly pinch back new grow to stimulate new smaller foliage, but is it ok to pinch back say half the stem to old growth, to decrease the thickness of the growth tuft on top from 2" back to 1". Will this cause problems with the stimulation of new growth at the ends of the stems or will new smaller shoots still develop???
I have read plenty of forum on how to pinch & prune, but have not yet found anything on how far back it is safe to pinch junipers, to reduce foliage without reducing the number of branches. Regards Ryan |

| Can I suggest you look at www.evergreengardenworks.com/articles and get a good idea about your question and more? You don't 'have to' constantly pinch new growth - when you do it depends on the time of year, what you're trying to achieve, the state of the tree's health, etc. and you have to keep in mind that doing it will stimulate new growth at the right time of year, so decide if it wouldn't (sometimes) be a better idea to not do it, and let the rest of the branch develop a bit more, and then snip as much or little of it off as you want to work in the overall design. That sentence is too long (sorry!) but I hope you can figure it out! There's no rule about how long or not to leave a given branch, but there are some guidelines about when and why you make the choices you do, so start reading. Also think about finding a local club where you could get lots of overall learning. |

| Thanks Lucy, I think I might go back & hve another look at my tree, it is fall here at the moment so I think I will wait till after next spring - summers main growing season to make any more major changes.I I have being trying to read as much as possible, but i guess suck knowledge can only be by trial & error, hopefully less error. I might eventually post some images for you more experienced bonsia-ers to maybe give me some pointers as I don't think there are many bonsai societies around my area. I'm always open for some constructive criticism. Thank you.
