Strongly suggest you first find a local club to join, and spend your money on a few books (Amazon.com has a great and huge line-up of bonsai books 'Used' really inexpensive - look for more recent titles). The trouble with buying first, learning later, is that the trees too often become 'sacrifices' to your learning curve. But if you're determined, a local nursery familiar with what does well in your area is probably a good bet - a 1 gal. pot of something that generally does well there without a lot of fussing is one way to go.
