Juniper Restyling

Hi everybody,

Last year I bought a nice Juniper starter tree.
It was plopped in a bonsai-pot and left to grow wild by the owner, but I reckon this tree had potential so I bought it for just under $150. (see pic 1)

Last year I started on cleaning the tree up a bit and trimmed all access voilliage,( The parts that grew directly up/downwards) and ended up with this. (see pic 2)

This picture clearly shows a pretty symmetrical tree which isn't preferable. So i've been working on a virtual lately to address this problem. The solution i came up with is a rather drastic one, and I want to hear some of your expert opinions on it before carrying out on the actual tree itself. (see pic 3)

The idea is that the tree loses it's seesaw completely by removing the first 2 branches. after that all the rightside branches are bent down.

Yup, fun little project juniper.  In looking at pic 3 the image is improved over pic 2.  There are some design problems though.  Its difficult to tell from the photos but it looks like the 1st branch on the right (viewers perspective) is doubled up, or perhaps one of the branches goes more towards the back. In time this proximity of branches will cause the trunk to bulge at the junction of these two branches. Sooner or later one has got to go. Might as well bite the bullet and do it now as opposed to later (take out the one that goes toward the back). It also looks like your second branch is a back branch.  That is good. The third branch is right above the first branch on the right, not so good. The ideal arrangement would have the third branch on the opposite side of the trunk from the 1st branch creating what artists call visual speed ( a back and forth eye movement as the eye travels up the trunk from the base). The fourth branch (left side) is in pretty good position but is a little large to be this high up on the trunk.  Taken as a whole there are significant design issues with the branch placement on this tree.  Will that prevent it from being a believeable bonsai. Probably not.  Also probably will never be a great tree, but it will be lots of fun and good practice for that great tree when you get to that level.
