| Hi there-
I'm a beginner with bonsai's. My first bonsai is a Ficus. I've had it for nearly a year and it was doing very well. Recently, however, and rather suddenly, about half of the leaves on the tree began to droop and the branches became brittle. I keep reading through books and I assume this is because of watering. One even said it was because the plant has been 'severely neglected'. I feel like now I'm even watering it when it doesn't need it at all. And yesterday, it looks like another branch or so was turning the same way. I guess I'm just looking for suggestions before it's too late. I know books say many lose thier first bonsai, but it's altogether a little depressing. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks so much... Livvi |

| It could have some kind of parasite - a picture would probably be helpful. I hope you are keeping it outside. It will probably be happier there, at least for now. If you haven't, you will want to introduce it to the new environment very slowly so as not to shock it while it's in this already fragile state. I don't know how Ficus deals with backbudding, but you may want to prune off the offending areas and just let it create new, healthy growth. Overwatering will cause more problems than it will solve. Do not overcompensate - if anything, when the plant is sick, it will be able to take in less water. Just be attentive but not smothering. If you have to water it less, but more often, do that. Just make sure to check the moisture level in the soil often. |

| Kylezo - you can't keep Ficus outdoors where he lives! It must be nice to live in CA and not be aware of the rest of us popsicles :-). The rst of your advice is right on though. |
