Received Bonsai as Gift...Help!

I recently received a lovely Juniper bonsai as a gift. As I read through the introductory information that came with it, I have to admit I'm a little intimidated. I just don't know if my home situation suits bonsai. Or maybe just not Juniper.

Since Juniper is an outdoor tree, I suppose the best place for me to put it would be on my West-facing screened-in deck. This spot gets lots of fresh air but doesn't allow for a whole lot of direct sunlight, except for some later in the day.

Then comes the dormancy period. For that, I guess I could put it in my basement in front of the west-facing sliding glass door. The temperature there in the winter is around 60 degrees. (Too high?)

Does my situation sound okay for bonsai? (I'm also concerned about "out of sight out of mind" syndrome; it being out on the deck) I have the option to exchange it for another tree. Would something like Chinese Elm as an indoor tree be a better option? (I could put it on a table in front of a West-facing window.)
