Thinking Out of the Box

I'm a long time garden web member, but new to this forum. I like the look of Bonsai, but I have never done it.

I'm here because I have a gazillion grape vine cuttings that have rooted. Some will go in the vineyard, and some in containers. The idea of Bonsai with a gnarled, grapevine intrigues me, and I know it has been done many times. I have excess rooted vines to play with.

I am a firm believer in air pruning pots (those made of landscape cloth, those with no bottom (set on fine mesh) and holes all through every side, those made of paper with lots of air to prune the roots. So, the root mass is huge!

I'm good with a sewing machine, and pretty sure I can construct a shallow pot from landscape cloth to host my first little Bonsai babies.

I look forward to your suggestions.
