My wife's bonsais are turning brown (dying?)

My wife's bonsais are turning brown. I am trying to help her come up with a solution for them. The type of bonsai (I know I'm going to get yelled at... but I don't know). They look like little pine trees. She got them from a "bonsai farm," not the mall. They've been great for about a year and about a month or two ago they started turning brown... we did bring them inside for the winter as we were scared that a frost might kill them. So a couple of questions:
1. After reading multiple posts (this is my first day on this) I keep reading that you shouldn't bring them inside... so can you leave them outside with temps in the 20s?

2. Is there anyway to bring them back? They are almost all brown, with just the tips of each branch still green.

Thanks

gb

I'm gonna take a stab at them being Juniper Pro Nana which is the most common Bonsai material in 'farms' and 'malls'. You probably should have checked about overwintering them, at least asked about it from the farmer? I would guess that--if they haven't already--they are going to die in the near future. If they are brown all over that's the clue.
