New to bonsai, looking for a conifer.

Hello,

I have never tried bonsai before, but really have liked the conifers I have seen. Can you recommend one that might be suitable for a beginner.

Also, what seems to be the best book(s) out there on the subject?

Cheers,

Gary

Hi Gary, don't be angry, but I'm not going to recommend anything (yet) because there's just more to it than buying something and looking at 'a' book. At least if you want something to live for more than a week! I know you've got your zone listed, but if you tell me about where you are, I can probably find a nearby bonsai club for you to check in with, and they're the best places for learning by seeing how things are done and being able to ask lots of Q's. Until then, go to www.bonsai4me.com, www.evergreengardenworks.com/Articles, and www.bonsaihunk.com (the latter being really for indoor/tropicals but still has tons of great info. You can't know yet what's important to growing trees in little pots and how many factors to consider, and spending your money now, especially on conifers (not the easiest way to start anyhow) would be discouraging, and I would hate to see that happen. Once you have some idea of what you might be getting into (it's not a hobby, it's an obsession, then I'll be very happy to help with whatever you need. Books alone at the beginning can be frustrating because they often don't explain terms well, and leave you with more Q's than A's, whereas the above will at least give you a bit of a jumping off place(s).

Thanks for the reply Lucy. Honest answer, thank you. I live in Rising Sun, MD. I will check out the sites you mentioned.

Thanks,

Gary
