Bonsai Ficus Ginseng

floridadeb

I just purchased my first Bonsai, a Ficus Ginseng, and it is a beautiful plant. When I got home though, I realized that the soil in the pot is covered in a layer of pebbles that appear to be glued or somehow all stuck together. Won't this be harmful to the plant over time? Water goes through to the soil, but the pebbles don't budge. I have already named the plant Buford, and he sits in my art studio and I talk to him when I paint, I sure don't wanna kill him. Any suggestions? Anybody seen anything like this before? HELP!
