Bonsai Ficus Ginseng

I just purchased my first Bonsai, a Ficus Ginseng, and it is a beautiful plant. When I got home though, I realized that the soil in the pot is covered in a layer of pebbles that appear to be glued or somehow all stuck together. Won't this be harmful to the plant over time? Water goes through to the soil, but the pebbles don't budge. I have already named the plant Buford, and he sits in my art studio and I talk to him when I paint, I sure don't wanna kill him. Any suggestions? Anybody seen anything like this before? HELP!

Pry up the pebbles at the opening near the tree using a bottle opener (works for me) and once you get it started, you can just peel off the rest in chunks. Fill in the blanks where a lot of soil comes with the pebbles and do use warm water trickled around the edges to soften the glue, then scrape off with a butter knife. I also suggest repotting into a fast draining grit vs the (probable) peaty potting soil it's in (most 'potting' soil is mostly peat). Then you can water without being afraid of drowning it. Make sure you don't leave the pot in drain water, but put it up on large pebbles in a wide tray of water to humidity the foliage, and keep it in full sun throughout the day.

floridadeb,, remove those rocks soon, they are put there for shipping so the soil will stay in pot.. check the soil fof good drainage. water when soil is dry alittle because the roots on ginseng hold water.what you see as a trunk is really roots so do not over water..i forgot remove those rock with a butter knife take your time so you will not scrape the trunk.. good luck john

I ordered a Ficus plant kit and when it arrived it was a straight inch diameter by about 5 inches length. Which is the root end? At one end there is a red dot on tip and the other end is a little larger which I assume is the root end. Thanks Charles

great information, i think its important to remove the stones/pebbles. your plant will develop a nice moss around the base of the your ficus ginseng
