collecting trees

Anyone from New England know what native trees can be used as bonsai material. There is a lot of Oaks, Sugar and Norway Maples, but I don't think any of those will work well. There are a few species of Cedar, any one know anything about Eastern Cedar. The Birches are getting harder to find as are the Hemlocks which is from disease, but I don't know if any of those trees would work, maybe the Cedars but I haven't really found any bonsai info on them.
