 o
help with Sago Palm

we received a Sago palm as a gift and have had it in our little green house for the winter. Now need to put it out as soon as the weather warms. How do I trim it as the fronds are really getting large though it is in a very small pot. What type of soil is best for repotting? Any help will be much appreciated. Mary

First, I don't understand where you live - it says zone 4, but then is followed by la. (Louisianna? Los Angeles? Somewhere else?) Zone 4 is e.g. Minnesota, where they're a very long way away from being able to put anything outdoors yet. In any case, it's not customary to trim the fronds, but instead it should be in a larger pot, in a fast draining mix like one used for orchids, with a little extra sphagnum moss mixed in. Sagos are very fussy about their roots being messed with, so I'd be very careful with them when you do repot. Don't change their configuration much if you can help it, except to loosen the soil inside them (they're fairly fat, and not at all fibrous as those of azaleas or pines, for instance, and there's relatively few of them). Make sure, however, to fill all gaps between them when you repot, by trickling the mix into the pot and periodically giving it a little jog on the table to settle it as you go. Be very careful also not to water frequently as they're much more prone to react badly to that than they are to not being done enough. Also don't overpot - they don't need much room and do better in a relatively cozy one (though yours obviously needs a change as it's grown). Don't put it outside until the last frost in your area has passed. Do give it all the sun you can, though you might shade the pot itself if you do get very hot summers.

Actually Lucy, that looks like an IA which is Iowa. Zone 4 falls into the upper part of the state next to Minnesota.
