How large is your tree? A picture? As an eventuality, one of the things you'll be forced to learn as a result of your bonsai journeys is a good measure of patience. If you're in doubt (you are) ;-) wait until next spring. What you CAN do though, if you think its development is impacted significantly by the roots, is either pot up or (if it's still in a nursery can) bury the container in the garden or a bed for the summer, after you've attended to heading off potential problems through selectively pruning the top. If the tree is very young, I STRONGLY suggest layering off the top of the tree to build a strong root base. Let me know if you want to look into that, and I'll help.
