trident maple repot?

Hello, I live in zone 6 and am wondering if it is to late in the season to repot a trident maple? I was going to transplant it into a finished pot and found a lot of roots. Almost no soil. Is it to late to root prune and repot? It has leafed out and is starting to put on a lot of secondary growth. I am concerned that it might not have enough room. Should for go the finish pot and just get a bigger pot for this year?

How large is your tree? A picture? As an eventuality, one of the things you'll be forced to learn as a result of your bonsai journeys is a good measure of patience. If you're in doubt (you are) ;-) wait until next spring. What you CAN do though, if you think its development is impacted significantly by the roots, is either pot up or (if it's still in a nursery can) bury the container in the garden or a bed for the summer, after you've attended to heading off potential problems through selectively pruning the top. If the tree is very young, I STRONGLY suggest layering off the top of the tree to build a strong root base. Let me know if you want to look into that, and I'll help. You'll end up with a new nebari/root flare that looks like the one you see on a tree I just finished layering off this spring:

You can still see the tourniquet wire if you look for it.
