Hi everyone:) I'm new to bonsai and my very first victims are in the backyard as I type!

I was just browsing this forum and someone said to put a seedling in a pot (not sure if they meant regular nursery pot or bonsai pot) to develop the trunk. I've run into this phrase a lot. What exactly does it mean? Is the main goal here for trunk thickness/height/taper/aging/all of the above? Any info/tips that you care to share will be appreciated:)

All of the above, about in that order. However, don't dig tiny trees and stick then in pots because all you'll end up with is a stick in a pot. Bonsai are made from larger trees that are cut back, not grown up from little ones, and potting makes them grow much slower than they do in the ground, so leave them alone til they're 3-5 yrs at least and have some kind of decent trunk on them.
