What should I do to bonsai a 4-year-old maple?

Sorry if this is the type of question you see all the time - Search for some reason keeps taking me to "Post" so that's what I'll do :)

I have a maple (sorry, no idea of variety - it's a green upright however) that's 4 years old that has grown naturally in a shallow bowl pot since a seedling and has not had any pruning or repotting whatsoever. Now I'd like to bonsai it (I'm a novice)and I'm having trouble finding info on whether this is even a good idea or if I should start fresh with another seedling?

It currently needs repotting altho it could probably last a couple months as is. If bonsai at this stage is possible should I wait until fall to repot and do other pruning at that time or is it ok to do so now? It's in full leaf. Or do a regular repot now and wait for spring for everything else?

I've found so much conflicting info - prune in summer, don't prune in summer - any suggestions will be welcomed!!
