Could someone out there help me by telling me the main differences between these two...When i bought this tree a couple of years ago i was told it was a Golden Cedar,i have been pinching back the flushes of new growth, now it is filling out really well and soon(another season or two)i will need to do more than just deal with new growth and it would be a benifit to know if i have a "Golden Cedar" or a Mountain Pine....or am i having a daft moment !...thanks all...........coops

Mountain pine is pinus mugo or mugho. It has long needles in bundles.

Cedars are conifers, but they're not pines (cedrus is the group's name. Pines are pinus). Cedars have short needles in clusters.

Coops,
Just do a quick search. You should be able to find pictures of both species and than have a better idea of what you are working with and its habits.

Coops,

If bought in the UK it could be Cedrus Deodara - Golden Horizon. Its a semi-prostrate form. There's several dwarf cultivars around now designed for gardens where Capability Brown style 60 foot cedars won't quite fit :-)

Very popular a few years back in the big chain garden centres and elsewhere.

If it has a floppy over apex, droopy branches and is definitely yellow/gold, its very unlikely to be any kind of a pine.
