Hi, very good question! I was actually thinking the same thing the other day! I believe maples are a good bonsai, and as sycamore is of the maple family (or at least i think it is) i should imagine it is a goer. I think I'm going to try with some seedlings I have found in my garden. I'm also going to try apple from seed....all experimentation t this point as I am SO new to this it is unbelievable...

Sycamore's worth a try, but if you want to grow apples, do crabapples because they're the only size that would make sense on a bonsai, not to mention not weighing down the whole tree (and remember fruit and flowers cannot be shrunken, only leaves).

Are there small species of sycamore?
The sycamore around here have enormous leaves.

What about a liquidambar? I see those seedlings everywhere, too...

I know nothing about sycamore trees. I live in zone 10 and it wasn't until just recently that I learned that the sycamore tree of Luke 19;4 was a sycamore fig. You all probably already knew this. Have a great day.

Liquidambar are used a lot more often for bonsai - why not try one instead of, or along with the sycamore? Then in 20 years, write to Josh and show him your tree :-)!
