Is it normal for air-layer roots to turn brown?

Ran a previous msg. Can NOT post a pic as my new ISP "weekend" tech help is worthless.
Acer Palmatum. 8 thick roots in the clear plastic bag. They were white and now that they are longer (2-3") parts are coloring brownish (possibly ..pinkish sorta brown)
Doing a dance between potting now or (as advised earlier) to wait a month or so. Would hate to ROT the roots and the bag is very wet inside.
Any idea on how MANY roots are necessary for establishing in soil? 3/8" trunk at layer. Tree sorta broom style maybe 6-7" above layer.
If potting, should the sphagnum go in the soil WITH the roots.
ANY adv appreciated.
First air-layer and pretty excited that it "took."
Thankee

Normal. New roots are white and as they mature they turn various shades of brown until they rot at around black and mushy.

But is it too soon to pot? And what about the burying the sphagnum with the roots?

Need answers as have never done before.

Thanks

Wait till you have more roots a few at 2 and 3 inches are not enough. Let it go till July or August and then seperate. It has been advised to remove the sphagnum but be very careful layer produced roots are easily broken. It is best that the moss be removed with tweezers. When the tree is placed in a pot secure the trunk to make sure the wind does not move it around and fracture the new roots.

What I have done with maples and elms, is split a plastic 6 inch pot in half with shears, Tie it around the air layer including the moss, removing whatever is holding the moss, leaving room for bonsai soil. Then I put the soil into the pot and make sure all air spaces are filled, water like a bonsai and during the winter remove this from the lower roots. I have had good luck with the roots moving into the soil and avoid losing the plant.
