 o
American Wisteria

I was at a garden center and ran across an American Wisteria called Amathist (not sure of the spelling) in flower.
I didn't even know there was an American Wisteria.
All I ever heard of was Japanese or Chinese.
Does any one know if is suitable for bonsai culture or has any one tried to make a bonsai out of one.
Paul

Hey Paul, it sure is. She's a high maintenance though (trimming wise) just ad other wisteria's are. I would try one if I were in you position :)

RE: American Wisteria

After I posted this thread and did research I ran out and bought one about 18" high and 5/8" dia.in full bloom in a one gallon container for $32.50.
Now for more research.
I understand that it can be planted up to zone 4 in the ground but how about in a container???
What is the best type of soil for this plant as a bonsai??
If it is like the Asian plants should it be in a deep pot??
Etc., Etc..
Any info from anyone who has grown one as a bonsai will be appreciated??

I have several of the same trees, all purchased over the years from the local home depot, for very good prices, aroung $15.
They are labled Wisteria amethyst, and Wisteria sinensis. The most recent purchase is now in bloom. I find the blossoms a bit shorter than the "normal" wisteria, but the added benefit is the aroma/fragrance of the flowers. One word of warning. Deer love the flowers, and I had one destroyed by them this spring.

Peace,
Mganga

I found the tag that came with the plant. It is called amethyst falls.
I live down town and so far there are no deer on Main St.:)
Your right about the aroma and I think the smaller flowers are a better size for a Bonsai.
