Wiring and Trunk Damage

Hello everyone. I received this ficus bonsai two years ago, and it has been generally healthy and grown consistently while I've had it. The tree was already wired when I got it, and I haven't touched it since. Recently, I've noticed that the wiring has been cutting into the bark, and in some places being partially engulfed by the tree.
Should I remove the wiring? If so, should I treat the trunk with anything post removal?

Yes by all means remove the wire. Very carefully trying not to scar the tree any more. The wire should have been removed way before now. You didn't know and I understand. If you could attend a Bonsai meeting and get advice from them as how to take care of your tree. Good luck with your tree. Larry
