My collected Native Maine red or Mountain Maple.Surviver.

Its either a Red Maple or Mountain maple.

It was collected. I Have recently put it into a pot. it was collected years ago when it was about 12 feet high. and moved to my back yard. where i experimented on grafting with it. and air layering. with no success. i cut it to ground level. And was amazed when i dug up the root ball. at the structure of large roots. and the base of the trunk(what was actualy below the ground but in sand). so i put it in a nursery pot and stuck in the garage for winter. This year. it has tiny little braches hugging the trunk with a thick brush of Little mini maple leaves. There are more sprouts comming of the trunk. The trunk has awsom movement. its about 3.5 inches thick. and about 5 inches tall. and the frame look old. Can i bring it in?? If i keep it in a very sunny window with lots of flourecent light. I know its in a very fragile state. Do i leave it to the elements Or baby it inside for a while?

I will be worse than fragile if you don't let it be a tree, and a maple at that, by putting it OUTside for life where it belongs. Bring it inside and you'll kill it. Trees have survived forever out there, maples are very cold hardy and it's summer now anyhow. If you want it to live, put it back in the ground til next spring and then take it up in the proper way (do you know how to do it for bonsai?) and put it in a training box - or else do that right now - don't even wait a week - and keep it OUTside for life. It's probably best to keep it in light shade this season, but not the 'dark' by any means, and don't water it to death, just let nature do its thing. All trees are tiny when young, but in fact yours is not young, small branches or not, so don't treat it like some preemie in a lab, let it be a tree.
