pepper tree bonzai

greetings from italy. i just bought a pepper tree bonzai (zanthoxylum) and would be grateful for any advise or care instructions specific to it. i've read and will continue to absorb the general maintainence instructions provided here but (so far) couldn't see anything specific.

we live in southern tuscany at an alt. of 580m. above sea-level. the house has a southern exposure with full-sun, all day long. we're coming up to the season of hot, dry weather - very hot in the day but comfortably cool (hopefully) at night.

i've got 3.5 hectars of land with just under 300 olive trees and rampant weed growth to look after and all i can think about is this little tree.

grazie - bill

Wow, it sounds like you have an absolutely beautiful home!!

I won't pretend to be an expert (I'm a novice as well), but in such hot and dry temperatures outdoors, you'll have to be certain to water it well. I'm sure others will come by and give you better help!

Hmm, interesting, because it's generally a tree that does like to dry out a bit in between waterings, but as yours is probably fairly small, I'd be careful about introducing it to 'outside' (only morning and late afternoon for a week or so, then full time), and do watch for drying out very carefully. I'd also put a white tile or something reflective against the pot itself to keep it and the roots cool. You might consider keeping it inside, depending on how things go. Any plants to ship your olives (and trees) over here soon :-)?
