Satsuki Azalea

Hello-

I just acquired a satsuki azalea which needs re-styling.

The tree is older (15, 20 years maybe) and is very "leggy"; however, the nebari is fantastic and worth the work to re-shape and develop, if possible.

Specifically, the canopy needs to be brought down significantly and the size of the tree reduced by 1/2, at least.

Does anyone know if satsuzki azaleas will back bud on older wood? Does the age of the wood matter?

The size reduction would likely eliminate most, if not all of the branches with leaves.

Also, when would be the best time? Fall? Winter?

Thanks.
