Satsuki Azalea

Hello-
I just acquired a satsuki azalea which needs re-styling.
The tree is older (15, 20 years maybe) and is very "leggy"; however, the nebari is fantastic and worth the work to re-shape and develop, if possible.

Specifically, the canopy needs to be brought down significantly and the size of the tree reduced by 1/2, at least.

Does anyone know if satsuzki azaleas will back bud on older wood? Does the age of the wood matter?
The size reduction would likely eliminate most, if not all of the branches with leaves.

Also, when would be the best time? Fall? Winter?

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes, azalea will back-bud. In fact they are one of the most prolific and easy-to-backbud species.

You can cut back as far as you wish, and you'll see a flush of new buds / growth appear.

For most species, the best time is spring, however with azalea, the best time is post-flowering. This is usually early summer (for me in BC Canada) that's around mid June.

Good luck
Cam.
