Well, it's not the time of year to officially repot (with rootwork, etc.) but you can either put it into the ground where you live, in light shade with lots of water for the next couple of months (providing the ground is well drained), or you could put it into a 1 or 2-size larger pot of the same type it's in now but don't disturb anything, just add soil around all the sides.

I wouldn't do more than a third at most... but you could wire this year if you want to, just watch out that it doesn't get growed around :-)!

Larke,,thank you for your information..you are saying cut a third of the root ball per year?? then back to a nursery pot our ground is clay and holds water.i think a pot would be safer for a tree that is going to be a bonsai i hope.. tell me what you think thanks john in w. va.

I agree... what will you use for the mix? Conifers don't take root pruning as well as other trees, so at least for now I'd be careful about how much you take off.

I guess the mix will be turface and wood chips like the larch is in.I mostly do elm,maple boxwood plants like that. this is why i ask so many questions..thanks john
