Quercus virginiana

Hi, I am very new to bonsai. I have been trying to learn as much as I can by reading, pictures, and searching the internet. One thing that I have noticed and can not find a good answer for is that I have not seen any live oaks used as specimens for bonsai. I was hoping that someone might be able to tell me why. Other than the fact that they are very slow growing I cannot figure it out.

Thanks

They're used - don't know where you're looking, but there's a thread about one someplace on bonsaisite.com.

I've never grown tham as Bonsai, mostly because I've watched others become frustrated with them.

They don't take to leaf reduction at all, yes, they are slow growing, don't like to have the tap root cut and don't like restricted roots. They tend to turn out looking like a stick in a pot with big leaves.

With everything else there is to work with why not use other things? This sport is hard enough without making it even harder.

Thank you for the information and I understand based on the things you pointed out. All of that makes alot of sense. I am in southern Louisiana and 100 year or older live oaks are on every corner. They are beautiful. Thanks again for the help.
