Hi. I am a new member. I found this forum searching about royal poncianna bonsai. I bought a bonsai recently that was thought to be a poncianna but through research, it is a nice Jacaranda bonsai old enough to bloom. South Florida has thousands of royal poncianna trees currently in bloom. I passed such a tree today and dug up a nicely shaped "pup" about 10" tall most likely from a fallen seed. I brought it home, snipped the long tap root, trimmed back the branches and potted it. It has a nice shaped trunk with a natural twist at the bottom. What are the survival chances? I am very vigallant in monitoring my new find. What are the chances of this specemine blooming in the coming years?

I can't answer your question directly as I have never grown the "Flamboyant Tree" as a bonsai. I do, however, have a Cassia, which grows under similar conditions and was started from a seedling. I have had it for 8 years. It looks fabulous, just like a mature tree, but it has never flowered. It is also deciduous and the period between leaf drop is getting shorter, down now to about 3-4 months, irrespective of how much I water - and you must water very regularly. I think mine may only have a couple more years to live. I just hope it goes out in a blaze of glory! I'd be very interested to know how you get on with your tree. My guess is that although it is not naturally a deciduous species as Cassia is, your main problem will be with leaf drop. It's a very floriferous species though, so I'd rate your chances of it flowering at about 40%. Don't expect flowers for at least the first few years. Natural saplings usually flower for the first time at 5+ years. Good luck. - Ian.

Hi I did that with a white form that i grew from seed. Grew to about 8 feet and remained very healthy BUT never floweered . at almost 11 years. 3 years ago I gave it to a neighbor where it is now pushing about 15 feet. You guessed it still no flowers!! i feel that it is probably permanently stunted?? gary
