What to do with these two Japanese Maples?

Last fall, I planted three of these alongside my house, hoping to thicken their trunks up a bit. These are my first trees. One was unfortunately mowed over, but the two that survived are doing quite well and I'm wondering if I shouldn't consider pruning a little bit. I've heard the best time to do this is when they're growing, is that right? Or should I just leave them grow another year or so and then get down to cutting them up? I can try to get pictures but with my roommate's camera, they won't be so good. Thanks.
