Where is the tree located? Not inside, I hope. If the trunk and limbs are still green (I assume you refer to a bark 'scratch test'?), then it is possible that the tree might recover. I've heard that they're pretty tough and hardy. I wouldn't personally chop the branches off, but I'm not an expert. The tree needs to be outside, if it isn't already. But you'll need to be careful - when buds and leaves begin to form, don't let the hot July sun wither them away. I'd suggest putting the elm in the shade of another tree, in a sun-dappled location. As leaves grow and harden off, gradually move the tree into brighter, more direct light. I'm sure there are other elm owners here who will correct my advice if it's lacking. Good luck! Josh

I've had a few Elm's that were always 'late' but I worried more when my girlfriend was 'late'. The die-back is tender new growth then harsh winter cold/wind, what you want to do is cut back the dead branches until you find green wood. I'd water it up well (once) and stick it in full sun until something happens then do what Josh said...partial shade for a while and let it re-leaf. Next year show it a calendar in about mid-April ;)) 'Yo tree...wake up!!!' Bob

Hmmmmm, ok, last resort...put it in the ground and see what happens. Don't even bother to mess with the roots just plant it up next to the house and ignore it for a while. I was here during the war, other than the bad situation then loved the country and the people. Moved here to teach English in a small town. The cost of living is very cheap here, nice climate most of the time and lots of trees to work on. Bob
