Hello - I am a newbie to this particular forum and I am interested in making my own bonsai. Or at least, attempting to make one. :)
I'm thinking of training a Portulacaria afra variegata..But I have a few questions. Can cuttings, freshly rooted and about 5-6 cm, survive in a non-soil mix? The pot I want to use is about 4 cm deep and 16 cm in diameter. Here is the pic: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s238/mynt494/Bonsai.jpg
Is this an okay pot? And if P. afra can't survive in non-soil mixes (I'm thinking pure gravel, or something), what would be a good mix? Regular bonsai mix?
And of course, other tips, suggestions, general info, and pointers are very welcome. :) I don't understand root-trimming, and know only a little of the basics, so please explain!
