 o
Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai - brown spots on leaves & stem

Hi everyone,

I am new in the bonsai care and I have owned a Hawaiian Umbrella bonsai since November of last year. It was doing great until the other day when I saw that most of the leaves have been attacked by brown spots. The spots are under the leaves, and some of them at the root of the stem. Even the new leaves, that are very tiny have the spots. I will post some pictures.

I moved the plant from under the lamp on the window seal because it's no longer cold. It grows very fast and seems to like it over there. I water it once a week with filtered tab water, by letting the water completely drain through the soil.

Thank you for your help,

Flori

Not sure if you really have any problem there, looks like it could be a simple side effect from non optimal conditions whether it be from over/under watering, to much/to little light or over fertilizing. Maybe someone with more personal experience with this species can chime in.

Since scheffis aren't botherd by many pests except for spider mites you can rule out pests. I've had problems with 2 different vareties of broad leaved ficus which show the same symptoms. It is probably the water. Our water comes from a well and is horrible -- we can't drink it. The leaves and some stems show this brown discoloration from time to time but it clears up during the monsoon season (at least for a few months).
It won't kill the plant it will just look a little ugly for a while.
