What are you thinking of layering? Where do you live? How much experience do you have? It does seem like an impossible idea, but more info. would help.

Sorry, I should have been more specific... I am in northern Minnesota, zone 3. The tree in question is a Tamarack(Larch) that I have growing on my property. It is roughly 10 feet of 8" trunk, followed by a drastic taper after the first branch. Air layered, this tree would have a lot of potential. I have limited experience air layering anything over 2 inches, but I would like to think that (in theory) the concept is the same.

Are you anywhere near G. Rapids? In Itasca? Used to live there (for a couple of very short times) decades ago when it was just teeny and fun. I have to tell you that I love larch, and would hate to see this one go the wrong way after getting to the point where it is. I wouldn't do it - never heard of anything that size being done to be honest (I was hoping someone else would come in here and tell me how wrong I am) and I also think it could take too long, so new roots would freeze before they really got going (and the time involve is unpredictable even with much smaller trees). I imagine it's so tempting, but please go to a nursery, get a 5 gal. one, plant it in your yard or a grow box and do your thing with it.

I live a few minutes north of Duluth, but spend a lot of time at my cousin's cabin near Rapids. It's definately not a "teeny" town any more. As far as the larch goes, I will pass on this one. I see your point in not risking a tree that has probably been around a lot longer than I have. There are countless smaller options to choose from that I can build from the ground up. I appreciate your input.
