Hello ,,,, I live on a farm in southeast Georgia and have a small 10 acre field in the back of my house where we have a small tree farm. Drake Elm, River birch, Crape myrtle, Live oaks to name a few... My plans this spring is to plant some trees to grow out for Bonsai.
What i would like to know from all of my Bonsai friends is , If you had to pick your top five outdoor Bonsai that could be grown in zone 8/9, What would they be ? Mine would be ... Trident maple, Chinese elm, River birch, Japanese maple and Black pine .... Thanks Greg

Trident maple, Jap. black pine, Juniperus chinensis 'Shimpaku', Korean hornbeam, azalea.

I really like Styrax japonica (Jap. snowbell) too.

Yes - Satsuki azalea.

How do you plan to manage these trees once established? Will you be chopping them back several times on a regular basis?

PLEASE don't forget the Shimpaku. If I had to pick only one tree as the only one I would ever work with - it would have to be the beautiful Shimpaku juniper. They come easily & reliably from cuttings planted directly out, up here in zone 6. I have them growing all over the place. ;o)I don't see why they wouldn't work for you, too.

yes.. I also like the Shimpaku . .
To answer your question on chopping them on a regular basis .. . I think i'll be growing them out in full follige for two, three , and four years . To establish a nice two to three inch trunk..''more follige, fatter trunk'' and they will also be planted on top of tiles in the ground.. for flat roots and they would be easier to pull up and root prune. I also will be adding a wire tourniquet the trunks 3'' below ground level so they will have good Nebari.. After i get my trunk like i want it, then i"ll start chopping and ramification...

Greg,

I would add bald cypress to the top 5. If you have access to a bald cypress swamp, try collecting some.

By the way, I am in Macon GA.

RE: Top five Bonsai

Hey Frank

We do have many cypress swamps . Ive collected a few already. I went through the one down from the house a couple a months ago and trunk chop about fifteen really nice specimens, some with four inch trunks. I'll be collecting them this winter. Forchinate for me bald cypress is one that i will not have to buy...LOL
Later .,.,. Greg
