Live Oak Bonsai

I have a live oak tree that I dug up when it was 3" tall, I had it in a bucket until 2002 but it has been in the ground for about 6 years now, it's been cut back and I want to put it in a pot soon I've been reading and I read that I should cut the roots and put it back in the ground for another year I know I should wait until spring to cut the roots but I am not sure how to go about cutting the roots. I do not want to kill it, can someone help me with this?
