is it just a branch?? i'm no expert, but i think youll need some root hormone if you expect a branch to root If you manage to get a root, it should grow fine.

Hi Try and go to a garden centre and look for good trees to start you going. Look for low growing branches with good trunk movement.. other wise taken cuttings and growing from seed, you'll have a long wait on your hands, by doing it my way you'll get your hands dirty in no time and produce a good bonsai within a sesean or two, take care..Lance.

You do not need any root hormone to do a layer, you should have the same results with or with out if you do the procedure clean and correct. The hormone may speed up the time it takes for the roots to emerge. Here is a overview link below on what is going on in the plant for the layer to develop. (this is a site I found, I have no gain or say in the site) If I was you, go to homedepot, lowes warmart or something like that and buy a one gallon juniper. Over the next six months, prune it down and then pot it in a bonsai pot. When I got mine, I pruned it down and trimmed the roots all on the same shot and had it in a bonsai pot the same day. Im surprised it made it past that. Probably even better advice, buy a few beginner books. I have only been in the hobby for about 1 1/2 years but had a very nice green thumb prior to that. This site and the books are irreplaceable to begin in this hobby.
Here is a link that might be useful: air layer
