Hi, I don't think you'll have a lot of luck rooting things at this time of year, and some things won't just 'root' because they don't (you'd need to grow them from seed, or do an air layer), and is you're misting that mix a couple of times a day with a cover - should be clear, not Tup-ware - on top, you're growing mold, not plants (and keep it out of the sun because condensation will also rot them). The mix should be just barely moist, you can check them daily for dryness being careful not to mash any babies, and if its dry on top then mist once only. But it's the time of year they're thinking about dormancy, not rooting. Plus if they were to grow roots, they'd have to be stuck indoors til spring, though sometimes trees can take months to root (do you have the patience?), yet they won't live indoors either for long. Plus you need to know what a cutting is so you can take proper care of the new one (if anything does root). Why not invest in a couple of books, do some reading over the winter and be ready to start in spring? And that might be a better time to just get a couple of inexpensive 3-5 yr old starter trees at a local nursery and learn to keep them alive for a season or two, then consider what you want to do for styling, etc.

By all means do it! Get some tropical thingy (not a 'Bonsai") at the supermkt, Wal-Mart, etc. and get going indoors, though remember it'll need really good lite and humidity increasingly til next spring when you can acclimatize it to being out til Sept. There are ficuses and Scheffleras, and lots more out there, so have some fun!

Also, depending on the schedule of local stores, many will be clearing out their nursery stock. You can get some amazing deals at this time of year.

im in high school to, its winter now
i cant do my bonsai thing now either

something to keep you busy growing stuff would be to go to some woods nearby and look for small plants like moss or strange things like that.

grow them and treat them like a bonsai until you can get a real one
thats what im doing to keep me sane.......

No no - digging anything now will result in dead trees. It's not the time to do it even if you know what you're doing and how to do it.

A better option would be (possibly) to pursue "indoor" (i.e. tropical) bonsai, or tropical accent plants. They won't cost more than a few dollars apiece and would respond better than ones collected from the outdoors.
