There is no way (short of cutting it off) to have a true idea of age, unless the person has kept a diary of the life of the tree. In most cases we estimate.

When cutting off a large branch you can have a better estimated idea.

Different trees grow at different rates, it depends on many factors.
When my friend gave me this Ficus he knew 'about' the age because he remembered about the year his mother was given this for her birthday. It was 'estimated' about 12 years, during re-potting I had to cut off one aerial root and a large root, to make it fit the pot. It narrowed down things a little but who cares? It's alive and now looks pretty decent, good enough for the girls I go with ;))
