new ginkgo

Hi All,

I just purchased a young Gingko biloba tree from the nursery and I have a few questions about how to style it.

It i about 50cm tall with a strong central stem and a number of branches radiating from the sides. I have read that "candle flame" is the best style for these. I have used plastic coated wire to pull the lateral branches in closer to the main stem to achieve a more upright look. There is a long sucker growing up from the root ball, should this be removed or should it be allowed to grow so that it resembles a large tree with a smaller one beside it? I know bonsai is an art and its brobably hard to comment without seeing the plant but does that sound ok or is a single trunk more attractive?

Its almost spring, when would be the best time to prune? After bud-break? When would be the best time to repot? It is currently growing in a tall, sqare based pot.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Adam

Hi, cut the sucker growth - it's not going to be a true trunk, and will take energy from the main plant. Just before bud break is the right time. Do remember that Gingko don't bud back well, so take it easy on pruning. Do look at http://www.xs4all.nl/~kwanten/ for a real learning experience!

Thankyou Lucy,

That is a great site. Would you reccomend removing the central leader to encourage the development of the lower branches? I want to achieve a more natural look. I think the term is "broom style".
