Indoor bonsai - an American thing?

When I first became interested in bonsai back in the sixties, my impression was that there was no such thing as indoor bonsai, that you could bring them inside for display for at most a day or two. Tropical plants were houseplants but not true bonsai.

Now there are books about indoor bonsai and tropicals are poplular at every bonsai nursery I've been to.

Am I remembering correctly? Do bonsai masters/growers in Japan raise indoor bonsai?

Well, their climate is generally warmer than ours to begin with, so the line gets a bit blurry there, but certainly they grow some. I think part of the difference and/or change may be due to the availability now of really good, dedicated lighting which may not have been around then, and the influence of the rest of the world going back to Japan with new ideas.

I'll still submit that there's no such thing as an indoor bonsai, but the tropicals do tolerate indoor conditions fairly well as long as you provide for their basic needs. I think the buying public has pushed for bonsai to be indoor so strongly, that this is a matter of giving the people what they want. I've got several tropicals, and since I don't live in the tropics, they spend a few months each winter indoors with me. They don't like it nearly as well as being outdoors, but I haven't spent the money on grow lights and such to really let them thrive indoors.
