| I got a beautiful gardenia bonsai as a gift 2 days ago. I had it on my desk at work overnight. Yesterday morning, I noticed that 7 leaves had white spots and some of the them were turning whiter and whiter. In the afternoon it had 10 and now 12. I noticed that a little part of the root is over the dirt, if that is releavant. Other than that it looks pretty but no flowers yet. I thought it was due to the artificial light in the office. I read that it is also and outdoor plant and I read about the morning sun and - afternoon shade so I brought it home and put it on the front porch. In SC we are having 100 F weather.
My questions are: - Are the white spots going to kill my plant? - Should I move it inside until it get cooler? - Is it too bad to move the plant in and out? PLease give me suggestions, i love that plant! THANK YOU! |

| Hi - I wonder if a) there's a glued down layer of stones on top, b) if you removed it (should have immediately), c) the soil is soggy wet or damp and you've continued to water (mealy bugs will love you!). If the spots are fuzziesh, you may have mealy bug for which a good house plant fungicide should be used, but also use alcohol on a Q-tip to wipe the ones on the leaves. If the soil's wet most of the way through, don't water til the top layer at least has dried (and you should repot into a faster draining mix without peat, using a lot of grit). Don't let the pot sit in its own drain water. If you've put it into that hot sun full time without any gradual time off at midday thru early afternoon, you could fry it, so keep it in light shade and shield the pot itself so roots don't cook. It may be an 'outdoor' tree in the right climate, but check into what that is, because I don't know if it's OK or not in SC (may well be, but...). |
