Not sure what it is, maybe a hemlock. If you want to grow it as a bonsai you will need to root prune. The best time for this is in the spring. Remove the plant from its pot and shake off the soil. Cut off the central root leaving only the side roots. Repot. Keep cool and damp until it recovers from the surgery. Good luck - Ian
