Chinese Elm Mallsai

Hey everyone. Picked up a Chinese Elm yesterday at Lowes to see if I could do anything with it. Maybe experiment a little and all that. I changed it to bonsai soil and found some great Nebari that was hidden. My question is, I want to do a trunk chop. I'm pretty sure now is not the time to do that, correct? And that I should wait until the beginning of spring? Anyway, I want to chop this tree at about the red line. But I also am considering chopping at the blue line instead. Or could I just air layer a little lower? Thanks!

what does the rest of the tree look like?? why chop that low?? you are right it is the wrong time of the year need to wait til spring show the whole tree anyway john

That is the whole tree there. I wanted to chop it that low to get away from the typical mallsai S curve and maybe turn this into something. Let a new leader form and let this thing grow.

You do have a new sprout there,let it grow unchecked till spring make your cut then plant it out in to something larger than a bonsai pot...good luck john

One step ahead of you. It is now in a bigger pot. So I definitely shouldnt cut it below that sprout. Gotcha. Thanks!
