Hey everyone. Picked up a Chinese Elm yesterday at Lowes to see if I could do anything with it. Maybe experiment a little and all that. I changed it to bonsai soil and found some great Nebari that was hidden. My question is, I want to do a trunk chop. I'm pretty sure now is not the time to do that, correct? And that I should wait until the beginning of spring? Anyway, I want to chop this tree at about the red line. But I also am considering chopping at the blue line instead. Or could I just air layer a little lower? Thanks!

Here is the tree in it's new soil and showing the nice nebari:

That is the whole tree there. I wanted to chop it that low to get away from the typical mallsai S curve and maybe turn this into something. Let a new leader form and let this thing grow.

You do have a new sprout there, let it grow unchecked till spring make your cut then plant it out in to something larger than a bonsai pot...good luck john

One step ahead of you. It is now in a bigger pot. So I definitely shouldnt cut it below that sprout. Gotcha. Thanks!
