Maple Shaping

I just bought a 2 year old nursery stock Maple. I like to keep my bonsai small (1-2 feet). Ive only worked with evergreens that i've found around my house, junipers, azaleas, hollys. So im not quite sure how to prune this maple to get the best amount of foliage. Currently it looks pretty bare as I assume it has received minimal pruning over its years. I've cut out crossing branches vertical growing etc but it has longer internodes. Im really not sure where to go with this 1.

Can you put up a picture. It would help us a lot. And when you say that you like to keep them small by keeping them 1-2 feet tall, thats tall for a bonsai. Usually they are smaller than that.

I'm looking more for tips on how to obtain better foliage. key things i should look for to prune besides the normal maintenance stuff. Most say i can chop about 25% at most a year but ive seen threads where they go far beyond that.
