| I've had this very nice tree for about two months. I have it in a 10" terracotta flower pot to give it room to grow better roots and increase its girth. This pot sits on a bed of river pebbles in a tray of water but I've been very careful to keep it raised above the water level. Now tiny white dots have appeared on the tree's older leaves. These dots are evenly spaced and make a design as if they were sitting on the leaves' pores. They're hard to rub off, which makes me wonder if it is salts transpiring through the leaves and not powdery mildew.
I've been reading up on mildew, fungus etc but I can't pinpoint the exact problem. I should add that I recently sprayed the tree with "Safer Insect Killing Soap with seaweed extract" when I spotted some thrips and possibly scales in the crawling stage. Will it be safe to spray a fungicide right now? I appreciate any help anybody can offer. Krys |

| Fukien tea have tiny polka dots on purpose! They're part of the leaves, so you don't have any mildew :-). Don't spray anything more - teas are sensitive to many chemicals. |

| Wow, Lucy. Thanks. It's just that these white dots have suddenly become very white, as opposed to sort of dirty white and a bit less conspicuous. I will definitely lay off the chemicals unless the bugs come back. By the way, when some of my ficus got scales I swabbed rubbing alcohol on individual leaves first to kill the scaly ones (I also scraped them off) and a day later I used the Safer Soap to get rid of any crawlies left behind. It seems to have worked without damage. Could you comment on this - pro, or con? Thank you again. Krys |

| I think you did just the right thing - and the way to be sure is... your tree is now fine :)! Whether it would work on other problems (you did the right thing for scale) on other plants is ??? |
