A large number of bonsai subjects can produce edible fruits, but none of them prefer to be grown indoors. I realize the pivotal word you used is ...'can' (be grown indoors), but the fact is that even the trees that 'can' produce edible fruits are unlikely to cooperate happily when relegated to the kitchen table or top of the TV. Additionally, most bonsai are not allowed to fruit heavily, or are allowed to fruit in alternate years or when the tree is at peak vitality - because fruiting weakens the tree quickly. Bonsai are generally allowed to fruit for the fruit's charm, not so we can eat them. Growing under a good light set-up and providing the other cultural conditions the plant prefers can change how a tree reacts to the indoor conditions commonly found in zone 5, but the trees still want to be outdoors when conditions allow.

And, not to mention your short growing season and a few other things. The fruit of Boxwood is said to cure 'all' digestive problems--it's more like taking a handful of Exlax and can be very, very bitter. Any ficus I've ever tried is woody and rock hard, sort of has a bitter-sweet taste and (I've heard) can be poisonious in some cases. Bob (stick to Wally-World)

What about blueberries? There are varieties of blueberry that grow in Alaska.... (of course, this side-steps the fact that you want the plant indoors....) Worth a look, maybe. Josh

Can you bonai anything, even vegetable plants? You could make a great mini patio garden. You can build your windows outward to make window greenhouses. If you don't want to build it yourself there are websites that sell them. They are just a huge boxed in window that goes over and below the one you have, but it's metal or wood framed glass. It would be nice to see those put in every apartment building. http://www.h2othouse.com/html/window_greenhouse.html http://greenhousestuff.com/greenhouses/garden_windows/garden_windows_p ricing.htm http://www.greenhousewindows.com/ http://www.aaagreenhouse.com/greenhouse_window_kits.htm http://www.superior-windows.com/viewProd.php?id=445 You can build your own here: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Do-It-Yourself/1987-11-01/Window-Greenh ouse.aspx
