Chinese Elm in Southern California

Hi. I am planting a Chinese Elm seedling in Southern California, in the Pasadena area. The seedling is about 2 feet high, and the diameter of the root is about 1/4".

Can you give me an opinion on where to plant it in terms of sunlight it will receive? I have a friend who has a garden and suggests I plant it in the shade of a bigger tree, as she believes that it will be in it's natural habitat that way (a seedling usually grows in the shade of a bigger tree). Thanks.

No question - the plant prefers full sun. Seedlings grow wherever the seed drops and takes root, and those that grow in the shade of other trees are usually out-competed by other plants or succumb to disease or insects because they are weakened from the lack of light. Only the strongest individuals that start their life in the shade of other trees are able to fight their way to a position that allows them their fair share of sunlight.
